MT5 SET Files Explained: How Presets Work

A SET file is a saved collection of MetaTrader 5 input parameters. It can make setup faster and more consistent, but a preset is not a universal guarantee and should always be checked against the product, account and broker environment.

What a SET file contains

SET files store the values shown in an EA or indicator's Inputs tab. These values can include lot sizing, trading windows, stop and target settings, filters, risk limits and other product-specific controls.

Loading a preset changes inputs; it does not change the compiled program itself.

How to load a preset

Attach the EA to the intended chart, open the Inputs tab and use Load to select the supplied SET file. Review the values before confirming.

Keep the original preset unchanged and save any personal variation under a different filename so you can return to the supplied baseline.

Why presets are not one-size-fits-all

Broker symbol specifications, leverage, spreads, commissions and account size can materially change behaviour. A preset should be matched to the environment for which it was designed.

Test on demo first and verify lot sizing, symbol mapping, stop distances and trading permissions before considering live use.
