MT5 Expert Advisors

What Is an MT5 Expert Advisor (EA)?

An Expert Advisor, usually called an EA, is software that runs inside the desktop version of MetaTrader 5 and follows programmed rules for analysis, entries, exits or trade management. An EA can automate a defined process, but it does not remove market risk or guarantee a result.

How an MT5 EA works

An EA reads market data available to MetaTrader 5 and applies the strategy logic written into the program. Depending on the design, it may monitor price levels, indicators, sessions, volatility, account conditions or other inputs before taking an action.

The EA can be fully automated or limited to alerts and trade-management functions. Its behaviour depends on its coded rules, the broker feed, symbol specification, spreads, execution and the settings loaded by the user.

What an EA can automate

Typical functions include opening and closing trades, placing pending orders, setting stop loss and take profit levels, trailing positions, limiting trading sessions, copying trades or applying account-level protections.

A well-documented EA should state the market, platform, account context and important operating assumptions rather than presenting automation as a guarantee of profitability.

What to check before live use

Confirm the exact MT5 symbol, contract size, digits, lot step, leverage, spread and broker execution conditions. Test the supplied configuration on demo first and review the Experts and Journal tabs for errors.

Historical backtests and demo results can be useful evidence, but they are not forecasts. Live execution can differ because of spreads, slippage, gaps, latency and market conditions.
